In the 1860 Census, he gave his profession as Agriculture in San Diego.

In December 1860, Governor John Downey of California commissioned D.A. Hollister as County Judge of San Diego County.

He is listed as registering to vote on August 6, 1866, listing his profession as “U.S. official,” and in September 1877 he was listed as a “Deputy Internal-Revenue Gauger” in San Diego. A “Gauger” was appointed to examine any containers of alcoholic goods (wine, beer, spirits, etc.) to determine their actual “proof” or percentage of alcohol.

In the 1880 Census, age 62, he reported his profession as “Stock raiser.”
