On August 21, 2021, Deputy Matt Gibbs died from complications of COVID-19, contracted while serving at the Superior Court North County Division in Vista, California, weeks earlier.
Deputy Gibbs had served with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department for over two years, previously serving 30 years with the California Highway Patrol before retiring in 2017.
Known for his sense of humor and sunny disposition, Deputy Gibbs gained national notoriety in 1994 when Tonight Show host Jay Leno joined him on a ride-along that was broadcast on the show. Deputy Gibbs was survived by his wife and four children.
